Tracking Results
The treatment experience begins with a visual field scan, a subjective test that shows the level of vision and pattern of damage in the patient’s visual field, the area of useable vision in the center of the eye. Scan are used to compare the patients vision before and after treatments. Distance and near vision acuity tests are also used, those tests with the letters on the chart.. Acuity tests confirm accuracy of the visual field scans. If an acuity test doesn’t match the degree of sight the person shows in the visual field scan, the scan is repeated.
After the first six treatments the testing process is repeated to determine any change in vision, usually on the morning of the third day. As treatments continue, tests are repeated periodically to track changes in vision, and at any time a patient reports that they have lost vision between treatments.
Visual field scans are objective in nature, while the acuity tests are subjective. Both tests are necessary to understand the degree of damage to a patient’s eyes, and to compare treatment results. Tests allow us to obtain an accurate representation of treatment results.
Between 2003 and 2008, over forty thousand eye treatments were performed on more than two thousand patients; each patient receiving about twenty treatments a year. Almost all of the patients show improvement in vision. Data taken from the visual field scans, and near and distance acuity tests show that ninety-five percent of patients gain vision, as much as an eighty percent gain in sight in some cases. Some patients will remain stable; over time they hold the vision they have. This is also a gain because with a degenerative eye disease a patient will lose vision in the absence of treatment.
